SAP New General Ledger

SAP New GL has been available in SAP since the release of ERP 6.0 as a choice between Classic and SAP New GL. Compared to the Classic GL, it offers a whole range of valuable functions, such as
- an accounting structured in parallel books and based on different accounting standards.
- The balance sheet and income statement can be broken down by segment, profit center and other possible, customer-specific dimensions (document split).
- Compared to the Classic GL, SAP New GL or SAP New General Ledger creates a unified data basis in which the previous, independent data pots for FI, Cost of Sales, ECPCA, Special Ledger are fully integrated.
- Coordination activities are eliminated or can be significantly reduced. Closing processes are accelerated.
- Reporting is made easier: The SAP New GL database is included SAP BW and SAP SAC integrated and provides the basis for legal as well as management reporting.
With SAP S/4HANA, the use of SAP New GL is now compellingly. At the same time, the configuration of SAP New GL involves very fundamental conceptual questions for the development of future financial and controlling structures and processes in the SAP S/4HANA transformation:
- Conception of a ledger structure (parallel accounting standards)
- Balance sheet/P&L reporting according to additional dimensions
- Review and consolidation of the chart of accounts
- Profit center accounting integrated in FI
- Unified basis for reporting (this requires a review of the existing reporting)
- Harmonization of currency settings

Introduction of SAP New GL
The introduction of SAP New GL represents a complexity driver that should not be underestimated. The specific procedure for the introduction and its timing depend on the selected scenario of the comprehensive SAP S/4HANA transformation (Brown / Blue / Green Field) and must therefore be planned together . With a brownfield approach, the transition needs to happen before upgrading to S/4HANA. The associated migration and subsequent activation of New GL represent a separate project preceding the SAP S/4HANA upgrade.
The new general ledger has existed in SAP since Release ECC 6.0. Up until now, however, its use has been optional. Since switching from classic to new general ledger accounting requires migration, many R/3 and ECC customers decided to keep their solution based on Classic GL (e.g. with established accounts or company code solutions for parallel accounting). In SAP S/4HANA, however, the use of New GL is now mandatory. At the same time, the configuration of the New GL is linked to very fundamental conceptual questions for the development of the future finance and controlling structures and the processes in SAP S/4HANA. Therefore, the design of the new general ledger is an important point in a SAP S/4HANA transformation. The introduction and migration to the new general ledger accounting must be taken into account in the SAP S/4HANA transformation planning. The three well-known SAP S/4HANA transformation approaches, Brown, Blue and Green Field, differ in this regard.
